The Details

  • Schedule

    The course begins on Thursday, September 11 at 10:00 AM MDT and runs for one hour each week on Thursdays over 7 weeks, with one break week included.

  • Format

    This is a cohort-based learning experience with a quick, easy application process and live virtual sessions—with only 15 spots available.

  • Extras

    Includes a 1-hour coaching session (to be used within 6 months of course completion) and a digital resource guidebook with strategies, intervention techniques, and sample scripts.

Course Session Outline

  • Session 1 – September 11, 2025

    Course Context & Foundations
    Introduces the structure and expectations of the course while exploring how facilitation connects to personal experience, confidence, and communication style. Participants reflect on their own identities, values, and roles when speaking or leading in workplace settings.

  • Session 2 – September 18, 2025

    Facilitation Skills
    Covers core facilitation practices including how to open a session, manage energy in the room, respond to different learning and communication styles, and stay grounded while speaking. Participants also explore techniques for managing anxiety and establishing clarity of purpose during high-stakes or challenging conversations.

  • Session 3 – September 25, 2025

    Negotiation Strategies
    Examines how negotiation works as both a workplace skill and a communication strategy. Participants practice identifying what’s at stake, what’s negotiable, and how to respond to resistance or power dynamics while remaining grounded in goals and values.

  • Session 4 – October 2, 2025

    Content Design
    Focuses on how to prepare facilitation materials that are clear, purposeful, and appropriate to your audience. Participants will explore different types of facilitation goals, consider how to choose content that supports engagement and accessibility, and reflect on how to adapt their tone and format based on the context and group needs.

  • Session 5 – October 16, 2025

    Conflict Management & De-escalation
    Provides practical tools for responding to conflict in the moment, including how to identify when something needs to be addressed, when to redirect or reframe, and how to maintain psychological safety while managing tension or disagreement.

  • Session 6 – October 23, 2025

    Building DEI Champions & Resilience
    Supports participants in identifying how their communication can model equity and allyship in practice. This module explores internal resistance, communication fatigue, and how to build confidence and capacity when representing change in the workplace.

James Demers (He/Him/His)

As a Senior Strategist & Trainer at CEC, James has educated clients on DEI concepts, gender and sexual diversity, and more. He is known for tackling challenging topics to support clients in their learning journeys. With over 10 years as a professional facilitator and 2SLGBTQIA+ diversity educator, and 16 years as a community builder, James brings depth, clarity, and compassion to every conversation. He has facilitated learning with over 300 teams across government, corporate, academic, non-profit, unionized, and non-unionized sectors—often in rooms where participants may feel uncertain, disengaged, or resistant. He’s particularly skilled in navigating high-stakes and emotionally charged conversations, helping learners explore new perspectives while maintaining a sense of dignity and psychological safety. James’ facilitation practice is grounded in equity, trauma-informed principles, and a deep understanding of group dynamics. He uses a range of methods including circle process, identity-based dialogue, and experiential learning to create inclusive and engaging environments for all learners. James adapts his approach to meeting learners where they are—whether supporting executive teams in strategic reflection, guiding frontline staff through inclusive practices, or navigating tension in intergroup dialogue.
